Law Protected Drivers from Lawsuits
By James Tam on October 10th, 2007
The law protected drivers from lawsuits over who was at fault in most cases. After an accident, the coverage would pay for each driver’s injuries regardless of who was at fault, and litigation was only allowed in narrow circumstances. Florida Hospital Association vice president Ralph Glatfelter said nearly 400 people are injured in car crashes every day in Florida and 40 percent of them are uninsured. Both chambers’ bills would come with improved protections to cut down on fraud. PIP claims were different from other insurance because the system didn’t have many controls. The measures also seek to end payments to fly-by-night clinics, by saying that claims will generally only be paid to clinics with a doctor as a medical director.

And family income cannot exceed 250 percent of the federal poverty level, which is $25,000 for a single person, $34,225 for two persons and $51,625 for a family of four.

President Bush and Children Healthcare
By James Tam on October 8th, 2007
President Bush indicated that he would be willing to accept a larger increase for a children’s health insurance program than the one he has proposed. Bush has hinted he is open to a compromise but still has not made clear what he is willing to accept. He continued to describe the measure that he vetoed as “deeply flawed,” contending that the congressional plan is “an incremental step toward their goal of government-run healthcare for every American,” which he believes is “the wrong direction for our country.” Bush also said that six states project that they will spend more SCHIP money on adults than they do on children in this fiscal year.

Health Insurance Policies for Children
By James Tam on October 5th, 2007
Bush said that “The policies of the government ought to be to help poor children and to focus on poor children, and the policies of the government ought to be to help people find private insurance, not federal coverage. And that’s where the philosophical divide comes in.” Bush delivered the veto, only his fourth while in office, with little of the pomp the administration puts forward when it takes stands that it sees as politically advantageous. A number of Republicans have complained that they have been poorly served by the president’s move, which could hurt GOP candidates in moderate districts.
